Historic of the Supreme White belt of Vovinam-Việt Võ Đạo

The supreme white belt is a highest rank of Vovinam-Việt Võ Đạo, defined by the regulations in 1964 (Internal Rules of Vovinam-Việt Võ Đạo in 1964, Articles 41, 42, Chapter 6).

At that time, the Vovinam-VVĐ had not yet special belt for the Patriarch Master. It exited only the white belt supreme.  Sometime later (nobody can remember the year) Master Lê Sáng has created the special belt with 4 stripes representing the different colors of belts in the system ranking of Vovinam-VVD, intened only for the Patriarch : it is the White Patriarch Belt (Bạch Đai Chưởng Môn).

At the founding of the World Federation and the World Council of Masters during the first Wordl Congress of Masters, in Auhust 1996 in Paris, France, Patriarch Master Trần Huy Phong has proposed to create the Supreme White belt for « masters, founding members of the first Council of Masters in 1964 or the direct followers of Founder Master  Nguyễn Lộc “ and it was approved.

In May 2008, at the 6th World Congress, through the draft of Master Trần Nguyên Đạo on the creation of a Supreme Council of Masters, the Supreme White belt is not reserved only for masters, founding members of the first Council and/or the direct followers of Founder Master. It became the belt for members of the Supreme Council of Masters, members who are nominated and approved by the World Council of Masters as 8 follwing criteria.

Criteria for nomination to the rank Supreme White Belt:
(Article 11, Chapter III, Internal regulation of the World Council of Masters).

1. To have criteria for membership in one of two cases :

  • To be “master” and to have contributed to the Vovinam VVD for the period 1938-1975
  • To be «master », member of the World Council of Masters and the World Federation.

2. To have contributed more than 40 years for Vovinam VVD 
3. To have at least, the rank of red belt first strip
4. To be aged over 60, the day of nomination.
5. To have an active past to promote the Vovinam-VVD highly
6. To have responsabilities on an national or international scale.
7. To be proposed by the World Council of Masters.
8. To be ratified by members of the Supreme Council of Masters
